CDL License Classes

To further define the type of CMV that each CDL driver can operate, each CDL license is given a class:

  • Class A – This class allows the driver to operate any vehicle or combination of vehicles with a gross combination weight rating (GCWR) of more than 26,000 pounds along with towed vehicles that have a gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of at least 10,000 pounds. Typical vehicles in this class include tractor-trailers and truck and trailer combinations. Class A drivers can operate Class B and Class C vehicles as long as their CDL license also has the correct endorsements.
  • Class B – This class allows the driver to operate a single vehicle with a GVWR of more than 26,000 pounds alone or towing another vehicle with a GVWR of 10,000 pounds or less. Typical vehicles in this class include most buses and many tow-trucks. Class B drivers can operate Class C vehicles with the correct endorsements.
  • Class C – This class covers any vehicle not covered by Class A or Class B that carries either hazardous materials or 16 or more passengers including the driver.
